NSUF 18-1584: Understanding the local atomic structure in variable composition, irradiated perovskites

Ceramics have varying uses across the nuclear industry, and have been proposed for use in advanced ceramic wasteforms, and novel fuel systems, to name a few. However, ceramics may undergo the crystalline-to-amorphous phase change that is highly dependent on dose and temperature. In this work, we propose to perform advanced characterization on a series of mixed cation perovskites in the irradiated and unirradiated states. Specifically, we aim to understand the differences in radial pair distribution functions between the crystalline and amorphous phases, and as a function of composition. In performing this research, we will develop a more detailed understanding of the ion-irradiation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous phase change occurs, and develop a more detailed mechanistic model of this process.
