NSUF 17-CINR-13050: Correlation between Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Neutron-Irradiated Ferritic-Martensitic and Austenitic Steels

The overarching goal of this project is to identify the correlations between microstructure and mechanical properties of neutron-irradiated ferritic-martensitic (FM) and austenitic steels. Life extension of existing light water reactors (LWRs) require advanced alloys capable of withstanding degradation in harsh reactor environments, with high fluence radiation-induced changes as one of the critical degradations. Advanced alloys are being explored and developed under the Advanced Radiation Resistant Materials (ARRM) program, co-sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute and the Department of Energy. Among the down-selected alloys by the ARRM program, FM steel Grade 92 (9Cr-1.8W-0.5MoVNb) and austenitic alloy 800 (20Cr-32Ni-TiAl) are two interested alloys for property assessment. This project specifically addresses the workscope stipulated in NSUF 1.1A to examine the neutron irradiation effects on mechanical properties and microstructural evolution under LWR relevant conditions. The accomplishment of this project will not only help understanding the essential performance of the interested two classes of alloys, but be more important to gain indispensable insights into the development of advanced alloys with superior radiation resistance. It will directly benefit the light water reactor sustainability (LWRS) program and bring values to the advanced reactor technologies (ART) and small modular reactors (SMRs) programs.
