NSUF 17-1055: Post-irradiation observation following high-rate self-ion irradiation of previously neutron-irradiated 304 stainless steel
The project aims to combine two types of irradiation to forecast the behavior of 304 stainless steels during extended life service in PWR internals. Using neutron-irradiated and previously well-characterized 304 SS, additional ion irradiation by using self ions will be performed to achieve damage levels not achievable by reactors. The great benefit is that in such "neutron-preconditioned" steels, phase changes expected from prolonged reactor irradiation has occurred. Hence ion irradiation at higher damage levels can simulate neutron damage more accurately. The project will not only impact understanding of 304SS behaviors, but also gain knowledge on whether such "neutron-preconditioning plus ion irradiation" should be widely utilized as a testing method for other alloys. The project will start from 11 TEM disks of 304SS which were irradiated by EBR-II. Both the neutron temperature and four elevated temperatures will be used during ion irradiation, each on an identical but separate TEM disk. The additional ion doses are specified to be 50 and 100 dpa. The ion irradiation temperatures are 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120°C above the neutron irradiation temperature. The ion irradiated specimens will be prepared using focused ion beam and characterized by TEM and APT at INL to extract swelling and composition information.
