NEUP CINR-17-12496: Group Actinide Separation by Crystallization: A Single-Technology Approach to Used Nuclear Fuel Recycle
Bulk removal of U, Np, Pu and Am, from UNF would be advantageous for future nuclear fuel recycle. A co-crystallization of the hexavalent actinides with U(VI) has been demonstrated and a process based on this would have many benefits. We will seek to gain a fundamental understanding of the mechanism of removal by studying structural attributes of the An(VI) in the solid with XAS, determining the most compatible oxidation techniques and studying the utility of dissolution-recrystallization cycles.
