NEUP CINR-17-12985: Irradiation, Transient Testing and Post Irradiation Examination of Ultra High Burnup Fuel

The regulatory burnup limit, 62 GWd/MTU, has been identified as a core design constraint that limits fuel energy utilization efficiency. Fuel fragmentation has been identified as a key issue to be resolved for burnup extension. The proposed research is targeted to fill a data gap to allow the disposition of the issue. The scope of work involves re-irradiation of high burnup fuel at appropriate power levels in ATR followed by transient testing, both out reactor and in TREAT.
