NEUP CINR-18-15439: Radiolytic Dissolution Rate of Silicon Carbide
A major question regarding use of SiC/SiC composites as accident-tolerant LWR cladding is the rate of dissolution of the SiC material in the radiation field. We propose to investigate the mechanism and measure the rate of dissolution under reactor-relevant conditions of irradiation with an electron beam. The silicic acid, CO, and CO2 product will be measured to quickly develop a matrix of dissolution rate vs. H2 concentration and temperature.
