NEUP CINR-18-15531: Repair and Mitigation of Chloride-Induced Pitting and Chloride-Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking in Used Nuclear Fuel Dry Cask Canister Materials

This project will evaluate and develop a set of tools to repair and mitigate chloride-induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking in 304 stainless steel nuclear fuel canisters. Advanced processes, including low temperature friction stir welding, cold spray deposition, vaporizing foil actuator welding, and soldering will be evaluated according to various criteria, including corrosion performance. The two most promising technologies will selected for further development and comprehensive study.
