NEUP CINR-20-19641: Mitigating stress corrosion cracking in austenitic stainless-steel canister welds using peening techniques

Laser shock peening, shot peening and ultrasonic impact peening and laser surface texturing will be applied for the mitigation of pitting/ SCC in 304L welds. It is proposed to understand the mechanisms of pitting/SCC resistance of welds as affected by a) compressive stress b) surface texture modification and c) microstructural change in the substrate surface resulting from the proposed methods. The study will recommend the best peening and surface texturing process conditions.
