NEUP CINR-23-29834: Transforming Microreactor Economics Through Hydride Moderator Enabled Neutron Economy

Microreactors will potentially require the cost of electricity to be <100 $/MWh, which will require fuel to be fabricated from 10 MWD/kg at >3 kW/kg core specific power. These goals are best achieved through a well-thermalized spectrum. Here, we use neutron economy as a core material selection criterion to advance entrained hydride composite moderators with the primary goal of significantly reducing fuel costs through novel microreactor designs.
