NSUF 17-974: In situ TEM Study of the Ion Irradiation Damage on Hydrides in a Zirconium Alloy for Nuclear Fuel Cladding
The objective of this study is to investigate the ion irradiation damage in delta hydrides present in hydrided Zr alloy samples. We propose to elucidate the driving mechanism of irradiation induced loop formation in hydrides by focusing on the fine internal microstructure of the hydrides and adjacent matrix material using TEM technique combined with in situ ion irradiation. We propose to irradiate in-situ four TEM samples the (IVEM)-Tandem Facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The irradiation will be with 1 MeV Kr2+ ions to different damage levels ranging from 0 dpa to 5 dpa and at room temperature and 350°C. For each temperature, one TEM sample will be irradiated with setting up initial diffraction condition for observation of a dislocation loops and a separate sample will be irradiated with diffraction conditions to observe c dislocation loops.
