NSUF 19-CINR-17159: High power irradiation testing of TRISO fuel particles with UCO and UO2 kernels in miniature fuel specimen capsules in HFIR
The objective is to investigate fuel performance of TRISO particles at powers considerably greater than the AGR test program demonstrating significant fuel performance margin. The expectation is for this test to further strengthen the safety case for TRISO fuels and demonstrate the bounds of the technology for application in very high-power density FHR designs. A comparison of average and peak particle powers of U.S. DOE • FOA No. 0001913 • February 12, 2019 the proposed test in HFIR versus the existing AGR program are in Table 1. These tests are conducted at three temperatures (500ºC, 700ºC, and 900ºC) relevant to FHR core temperatures with the goal of demonstrating if phenomena of interest are temperature dependent.
