NSUF 12-361: Characterization of reactor irradiated ODS materials using Local Electrode Atom Probe Tomography.

The nuclear materials group at the Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC-Berkeley is one of the first groups to perform small scale mechanical testing (SSMT) on irradiated materials as well as Local Electrode Atom Probe Measurements (LEAP) on highly irradiated alloys [1,2]. In this work we intend to investigate irradiated ODS samples (MA957) from the FFTF-MOTA irradiation at the ATR facility. It is the intention to study those samples irradiated up to 110dpa at various temperatures in order to understand their micro structural stability during irradiation and draw conclusions about the potential mechanical property response. We want to investigate if the oxide clusters change after high dose irradiation and if additional clusters like alpha prime form. UCB has access to the samples owned by PNNL and did prior initial LEAP investigation on these specimens. However, in order to perform a complete investigation on the micro structural evolution of these specimens under radiation detailed LEAP analysis is needed. In order to perform this analysis UCB will send a student who has initial experience with LEAP data analysis to the ATR facility and use the machine on the samples in question. The FIB based lift out sample preparation will be performed partly at UCB and partly at INL. The hot FIB at UCB will be used to cut out large foils (20um x 10um x 1um) and mount on a Si stub sample grit. The sample grit will be send to INL where the foil will be used to manufacture actual LEAP needles on the ATR FIB. The so produced samples will be analyzed using the LEAP. Upon availability and approval by the proposal holder from previously ATR irradiations additional samples irradiated in the ATR program might be investigated using LEAP.
