NSUF 17-CINR-13106: Radiation Effects on Zirconium Alloys Produced by Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Processes
The goal of this project is to understand the effects of radiation on Additively Manufactured (AM) zirconium materials for critical Light Water Reactor (LWR) and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) applications. Nuclear grade Zircaloy-2 AM materials were fabricated by Westinghouse along with its industrial partners. Select samples are currently being irradiated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Reactor (MITR). This project will focus on post irradiation examination (PIE) to mechanically test and microstructurally characterize the irradiated AM zirconium samples after each exposure in the MITR to determine the effects of radiation on the AM zirconium materials. These results will be used as inputs for modeling of the microstructural evolution of the AM materials under irradiation and will provide critical data to support qualification of AM materials for use in reactor and fuel components.
