NSUF 18-CINR-14749: Irradiation Behavior of Piezoelectric Materials for Nuclear Reactor Sensors

The purpose of the study is to investigate the physical behavior of piezoelectric aluminum nitride (AlN) in an irradiation environment. This will be achieved by instrumented-lead experiments in which in-situ electronic measurements will be performed during the irradiations. The experimental results will be analyzed to determine piezoelectric, elastic and dielectric properties of AlN material under nuclear reactor environmental conditions. The outcome of this study will be used to establish the feasibility of using AlN ultrasonic-based sensing technologies in nuclear reactor applications, similar to current application of piezoelectric materials in demanding measuring and monitoring applications in non-nuclear environments.
