NSUF 25-5409: In-Situ Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Study During Tensile Deformation of Neutron Irradiated MA957 ODS Alloy

This research explores the hypothesis that neutron irradiation alters the dislocation and grain structure of MA957 steel, impacting its mechanical properties, even if oxide precipitates remain unchanged. MA957, a ferritic oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloy, is ideal for next-generation nuclear reactors due to its superior high-temperature strength and resistance to creep, oxidation, and irradiation. Experiments will be conducted at the 1-ID X-ray beamline at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). MA957 tensile specimens irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) to ~9 displacements per atom (dpa) at 300°C, 550°C, and 675°C will be used along with an unirradiated specimen for reference. These samples are from the Nuclear Fuels and Materials Library (NFML) of the Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF). In-situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction and uniaxial tensile testing at room temperature will be performed using an MTS closed-loop servo-hydraulic test frame with a maximum force of ±15 kN and a strain rate of ~1 × 10-5 s-1 until failure. Diffraction measurements will be taken periodically throughout the deformation process along the gauge section of each tensile specimen. This study aims to clarify the effects of temperature and radiation on MA957, enhancing the understanding of structure-property relationships in neutron-irradiated ODS alloys.
