NSUF 17-CINR-12573: PERFORMANCE OF SIC-SIC CLADDING AND ENDPLUG JOINTS UNDER NEUTRON IRRADIATION WITH A THERMAL GRADIENT

The proposed project would investigate the effects of temperature and thermal gradients on the irradiation performance and stability of joints in silicon carbide (SiC) cladding and endplug geometries. The test capsule would be designed to replicate conditions anticipated for advanced high temperature reactor fuel cladding applications, including representative thermal gradients. Several candidate joining methods would be examined, including SiC-based and oxide-based joint compositions, and irradiated performance would be compared to as-fabricated properties, including microstructure, mechanical strength, and permeability. The joining techniques would be evaluated for stability, and the post-irradiation examination results would be incorporated into stress and performance modeling codes for SiC-based cladding structures.
