NSUF 24-4961: Concentration Measurements of Helium and Boron in Degraded Stainless Steel Nuclear Plant Components

This project will characterize trace levels of helium, boron, and lithium in stainless steel artifacts from an operating nuclear reactor. Boron measurements will include isotopic characterization, i.e., separate measurements of B-10 and B-11 concentrations. These will be used as inputs for modeling of helium generation in reactor components, which will then be used to support welding repairs of degraded components. Instruments used will be STEM-EELS, LIBS, and LA-MS. These are cutting edge measurement techniques, and this program will be an important demonstration for the nuclear industry. Confidence in helium generation calculations is necessary for implementation of welding repair techniques on irradiated materials, which will be necessary for long-term operation of the current light water reactor fleet.
