NSUF 24-4979: Quantification of Zr Redistribution in Irradiated U-Zr Annular Fuel using EPMA
This RTE is focused on advancing the development of next generation metallic fuels for fast reactors in support of the DOE NE mission. It aims to acquire electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) data to help validate a BISON constituent redistribution model that is being developed for annular U-Zr fuels. Based on recent examination of annular U-10 Zr fuel carried out by DOE NE, Zr redistribution in annular U-Zr fuels appears to be distinctively different from their solid fuel counterparts. To date, experimental characterization of annular U-Zr fuels was limited to energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) in scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and selective area electron diffraction (SAED) in transmission electron microscopes (TEM). While these examinations highlighted differences in constituent redistribution between solid and annular fuels, the acquired data did not span the entire cross-section of the fuel and quantitative information on Zr concentration in each region is still lacking. The proposed EPMA analysis will capture constituent redistribution as a function of radial position, which is needed to validate BISON models
