NSUF 24-5167: Comparative Analysis of Hastelloy X and 316L Stainless Steel Under Simultaneous Irradiation and Corrosion for Advanced Reactor Applications

This research investigates the performance of Hastelloy X and 316L stainless steel under simultaneous irradiation and corrosion to evaluate their suitability for molten salt reactors (MSRs). Prepared as metal foils, the samples will undergo 2.5 MeV proton irradiation and FLiNaK salt corrosion at 700 ± 5°C for 48 hours, replicating MSR conditions. Analytical techniques, including SEM, EDS, EBSD, FIB, and TEM, will assess corrosion features, elemental distribution, grain structure, and irradiation-induced defects. The study aims to elucidate the interaction between irradiation and corrosion. The findings will guide the selection and design of materials for next-generation MSRs, ensuring they meet safety and efficiency benchmarks while advancing energy technologies. Ion irradiation is to be performed at Texas A&M University Accelerator Laboratory and FIB/TEM is to be performed at CASE.
