NSUF 16-CINR-10834: Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Nano-modified Concrete

Motivation. Extending the service life and performance of used nuclear fuel (UNF) dry storage systems requires a fundamental understanding of the physico-chemical processes occurring during exposure to gamma irradiation of concrete in dry state conditions. Most research to date on the effect of gamma irradiation on concrete, however, has been with simultaneous exposure to neutron radiation and in wet state conditions. The effect ofgamma radiation alone on concrete in the dry state has largely been ignored.Objectives. The objective of the proposed project is to determine the effects of gamma exposure on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cement-based materials containing nano-sized and nano-structured particles. The project is part of NEUP DENE000734 - Development of a Nano-modified Concrete for Next Generation of Storage Systems - that aims at identifying nano-particle content and combinations that demonstratemaximum synergy for a superior, gamma resistant concrete for dry storage systems.
