NSUF 16-863: Irradiation of the vanadium carbide coating on HT-9 steel using protons
A vanadium based coating layer on the inner surface of HT-9 fuel cladding fuel was successfully developed for mitigating the fuel cladding chemical interaction occurring in a transuranic bearing metal fuel system. The function of interdiffusion barrier has been evaluated using out-pile diffusion couple experiments, however, the irradiation response of this coating layer and the interface between coating and HT9 substrate is yet to be evaluated. We propose to use proton irradiation as a surrogate of neutron irradiation for radiation response-screening studies. The irradiation will be conducted using a 2 MeV proton beam at one of the NSUF partner facilities, and the proposed irradiation temperature is 500oC and two dose levels of 1 and 3 dpa will be pursued. Post irradiation examination will be conducted using focus ion beam (FIB) sample preparation and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) microstructure examinations on the project PI’s institute campus. The project PI is fully committed to meet the NSUF required research schedule and deliverable expectations.
