NSUF 18-1532: Investigation of the synergistic effects of dual beam irradiation in an austenitic-ferritic duplex alloy
This project aims to (1) considerably improve the fidelity of ion irradiation as an accelerated material irradiation testing method by investigating the synergistic effects of dual beam (heavy ion+helium) irradiation on the microstructure evolution and (2) study the differences of radiation response of austenite phase and ferrite phase of a duplex alloy, CF8 cast stainless steel, under in-situ dual beam irradiation. In-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) dual beam irradiations and corresponding single beam irradiations will be conducted to study the synergistic effects. Both cavities (helium bubbles and voids) and dislocation loops will be characterized by TEM to quantify the synergistic effects on void swelling and defect evolution. The outcomes of this project will provide critical insights on the synergistic effects and separate effects and advance the ion irradiation campaign. In addition, the radiation response of austenite grains and ferrite grains will be compared directly at the same time under in-situ dual beam irradiation. This first-of-a-kind experiment will produce innovative and important results to advance the understanding of the swelling behavior of different matrix phases, at early stages (incubation period) dominated by bubble/void nucleation. By revealing the physical mechanisms governing the incubation period of swelling, this project can potentially lead to significant advancements in radiation resistant alloy development. This project will be conducted at the IVEM facility and all the experiments will be finished within two weeks of IVEM beamtime.
