NSUF 15-531: Synergistic Effects of Thermal aging and Neutron Irradiation in 304L Welds
The work is planned to systemically characterize the thermally aged and neutron irradiated 304L stainless steel welds by using TEM and APT, and the research will mainly focus on the embrittlement mechanism of the delta ferrite. The output from the execution of proposed study will fill the existing knowledge gap by providing an insight into the synergistic effects on microstructural evolutions from the thermal aging and low dose neutron irradiation. By correlating the microstructural studies with the associated mechanical tests, this proposed research will provided a fundamental understand on the aging behavior of austenitic stainless steel welds during the designed 40 years reactor life, and more relevantly during the extended life of 60 years and beyond.
