NSUF 25-5264: Exploring radiation tolerance in novel FeCrVZrAl high entropy alloys for advanced fission reactor applications

This research project aims to investigate the effects of high-temperature ion irradiation on novel FeCrZrAlV high entropy alloy (HEA) synthesized through arc-melting, additive manufacturing and thin-film deposition. The composition of this HEA is based on thermophysical calculation and simulation, chosen for low neutron cross-section and short half-life for the intended use in fission application. Utilizing in-situ electron microscopy at the IVEM facility, the study aims to assess how manufacturing processes and microstructural features impact damage accumulation under irradiation. The experiments will involve in-situ ion irradiation that will be performed using dual beam irradiation with 1 MeV Kr+ and 16 keV He+ ions, targeting a maximum dose of 10 dpa at temperatures up to 800 ̊C relevant for fast neutrons in Gen V reactors. The performance of these materials under irradiation will be assessed through periodic large-angle tilt series to create a pseudo three-dimensional view of damage accumulation. The expected period of performance for this project is one year. Successful completion of this research will significantly enhance our understanding of the irradiation resistance mechanisms in these novel HEAs, specifically the impact of compositional complexity and fabrication methods on their behavior. This knowledge will contribute to the development of advanced materials for nuclear fission reactors, providing insights into optimizing alloy design for improved radiation tolerance. The anticipated scientific outcomes include a comprehensive understanding of irradiation resistance of these novel HEAs, and the effects of fabrication methods on microstructural responses. This research will generate fundamental data that will guide future experiments and support the development of next-generation materials for high-temperature and radiation-intensive environments.
