NSUF 18-1435: Determining Annealing Kinetics of SiC to Enable in LWR Accident Modeling

Silicon carbide composite has been discussed for more than a decade as a potential Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) cladding. Recently, an Integrated Research Proposal “Development of Accident Tolerant Fuel Options For Near Term Applications" has undertaken to model SiC cladding under a range of accident scenarios. However, fundamental data such as the rate at which the large irradiation-induced swelling of SiC anneals is not known. As this swelling, and the differential swelling upon annealing, can be a large source of stress, understanding this kinetic information is crucial. This RTE proposal measuring such kinetics of SiC on previously irradiated SiC currently residing in the MIT reactor hot cells. Work will be carried out by simple furnace annealing and density measurement, also in the MIT National Scientific User Facility. Data will be utilized by the IRP and published openly.
