NSUF 24-5081: Understanding the effect of Helium and neutron irradiation in ODS alloys.
This proposal leverages previously irradiated ODS materials (14YWT) from the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), exposing them to both high doses of radiation and high doses with injected Helium. These materials stem from a distinctive series of experiments employing neutron/alpha reactions to produce samples experiencing varied doses and doses combined with helium in the same specimen. The examination of these samples will employ nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and microcompression testing, supplemented by a thorough analysis of nanoindentation pile-up, aimed at elucidating the mechanical property alterations induced by radiation under different conditions. Two distinct sets of production parameters for the materials were selected to observe the influence of consolidation temperature on these property changes. Additionally, microstructural investigations via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were previously conducted by UCSB.
