NSUF 24-5155: Formation and dissolution of carbides and precipitates in self-ion irradiated HT9 alloy, and the impact on its mechanical properties
We have recently shown that ion irradiation can induce the formation of carbides in HT-9 when the ion irradiation temperature is below a critical value. At a temperature higher than the critical value, carbides never form. The formation and dissolution of carbides are expected to affect the mechanical properties of HT-9, which is yet to be studied. In the project, we aim to understand (1) whether the critical temperature dividing carbide formation and dissolution is sensitive to the dpa rate or not and (2) what are the mechanical property changes in carbide-induced and carbide-free HT-9 under indentation. Ion irradiation is to be performed at Texas A&M University, and FIB/TEM/indentation compression is to be performed at CAES.
