NSUF 19-1672: Microstructure characterization on neutron irradiated and post-tensile duplex stainless steels

The work is planned to systemically understand the microstructural evolution and mechanical response of duplex stainless steel due to thermal aging and neutron irradiation. Our preliminary in-situ Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS) tensile test has shown that the ferrite phase is significantly embrittled by thermal aging and the load partition between ferrite and austenite becomes more evident as thermal aging time increases. To understand the fundamental mechanism about the embrittlement of ferrite phase, both the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT) will be used to study thermal aging/neutron irradiation induced nano-sized features including dislocations, phase separation and precipitates. The proposed microstructure characterization not only is complementary to our WAXS result on thermally aged samples, but also provides comparative information for predicting the mechanical property of neutron irradiated duplex stainless steels.
