NSUF 19-1700: In-Situ Observation of Radiation-Induced Phase Transformation in U-Mo
It was speculated that recrystallization in U-Mo fuels may be related to the lattice stresses accumulated during the reordering of lattice atoms from one crystal structure to another. However, it is extremely difficult to capture the α-phase transformation process in ex-situ neutron or ion irradiation. In-situ irradiation technique in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) provides a viable means to directly observe the dynamic process occurring during irradiation. For this reason, in-situ ion irradiation at the Intermediate Voltage Electron Microscope (IVEM)-Tandem facility at ANL is proposed in this study to observe the microstructural evolution of decomposed γ-U region under irradiation.Many details of the phase reversal phenomena will be studied, for example, the nature of the dislocations formed during the phase reversal process , which is essential to develop the theoretical model for simulating the recrystallization mechanism in U-Mo fuels. In addition, irradiation temperature and dose rate will also be investigated.The expected period of performance is Feburary 2019. Results from this study will not only help deepen the fundamental understanding of the defect evolution process during α-phase reversal but also provide critical information for theoretic modelling.
