NSUF 08-96: Influence of Fast Neutron Irradiation on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Nanostructured Metals/Alloys

We aim to study the neutron irradiation effects on nanostructured metals and alloys. Both nanograined and oxide-dispersion strengthened alloys will be investigated. These materials have been shown to have superior radiation damage resistance, and fundamental understanding gained will further nuclear energy missions of the universities (NCSU and INL). Detailed PIE including microstructural examination (TEM) and mechanical property characterization of the irradiated materials will be conducted by the students at INL. The study is expected to extend over a time period of two-to-three years.
