NSUF 17-1121: Characterization of the Stability of the Microstructure of Novel ODS Alloys

The objective of this work is to characterize the irradiated microstructure of a set of novel ODS alloys. The novelty of those alloys lays the chemical composition of the nanoclusters. Although the enhanced properties of the unirradiated alloys are interesting, it is necessary to confirm the stability of the special nanoclusters and assure that they enhance the resistance to radiation as expected. To achieve that, two heats have been previously irradiated with self- ion to 100 dpa. The irradiated microstructure will be characterized and compared with the unirradiated microstructure. Atom probe tomography (APT) will also be used to observe the nanoclusters, the formation of radiation induced precipitates and segregation of minor elements. Nano hardness will be used to measure irradiation induced hardening. Characterization of the irradiated microstructure (dislocation loops, voids) will be performed using transmission electron microscope (TEM).

This work will demonstrated the potential for development of new ODS alloys by tayloring the chemical composition of the nanoclusters. The specimens are available and the proposed work will take about 6 months to complete.
