NSUF 24-5157: TEM determination of dislocation structure formation at 4% tensile deformation in a neutron irradiated Fe-9Cr Model Alloy

This work will build on in situ tensile deformation in the ANL Advanced Photon Source where we have performed in situ tensile deformation studies on ATR neutron irradiated Fe-9Cr alloys. In those studies, we employed both near-field and far-field x-ray data collection techniques during tensile deformation which allowed us to reconstruct individual grain structures (near field) and grain deformation and rotation (far field) to analyze deformation processes in individual grains. For the current study, we will concentrate on a neutron irradiated tensile specimen (300C to 0.1 dpa) which was deformed 4%. The specimen was irradiated in ATR and, due to neutron irradiation, has uniform bulk irradiation damage across the full specimen volume. Since we know the grain structure and orientation to the tensile axis from the APS work, we will directly image dislocation structures in specific deformed grains to match or correlate the dislocation structures with the synchrotron-determined sub- or child-grain structures. In larger grains, we find internal regional deformation locations. The TEM work here will allow us to understand the reasons for localized deformation. This program will use SEM/EBSD to locate individual grains which were imaged at the APS and take FIB liftouts for TEM analysis. The orientation of the liftouts to the tensile deformation direction and their regional location inside specific grains will provide important information about observed anomalous deformation processes in irradiated materials. The information from the irradiated specimen will be compared to similar deformation analysis on an unirradiated specimen from the same Fe-9Cr alloy heat.
